Janet Te Rore

Janet Te Rore B. Ed.
Te Kaiwhakahaere (Chairperson)

Janet who is of Te Roroa descent is originally from Kaihu. She has a substantial background in business and education. Janet has worked in the finance sector and in broadcasting. She has a burning passion for education and has actively supported lifelong learning over many years.

Janet’s journey with adult literacy started in South Canterbury in 1994 where she tutored at Aoraki Polytechnic and South Canterbury Literacy in Timaru. At the time she was also chairperson of the Timaru West Board of Trustees and President of the Aoraki Polytechnic Students Association. In 1997 Janet returned home to Northland and saw a critical need for an effective adult literacy service for the area. Meeting local literacy needs was her single minded goal.

In 1999 fuelled by this passion Janet set up Te Roroa Learning Assistance Charitable Trust in Dargaville. During the organisation’s development Janet has fulfilled roles there as manager, tutor and Board member.

Janet recently completed almost two terms, as a Ministerial appointment, on the Council of Northland Polytechnic and is currently a primary school teacher in Whangarei and heads the Board of Trustees at Te Roroa Learning Assistance.

Janet agrees with the former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, who said “Literacy is a platform for democratisation, and a vehicle for the promotion of cultural and national identity”, and adds that all educators have a responsibility to provide quality education and to encourage lifelong learning.
