The kaupapa for this design is the acknowledgment and celebration of the founding Tupuna of the Te Roroa Tribe.
The two Manaia forms represent the brothers Manumanu I and Rangitauwawaro the Ngai Tamatea descendants of Tohe. The brothers migrated from Muriwhenua in the far north to occupy land in Waimamaku, Kawerua, Waipoua, Maunganui, Kaihu and in the Northern Wairoa and at that time they adopted the name Te Roroa. The Mana of the brothers is affirmed by the two outward facing Manaia forms.
Traditionally the Manaia symbolise the sacred nature of humanity, the Mana of Chieftainship, prestige and charisma.
